Dr. PRAKASH RANJAN MISHRA

The Central Sanskrit University started a one-year P.G. Diploma Course in Karmakanda and Paurohitya with the objective of imparting practical and theoretical knowledge of Vedic rituals and priestly practices.

Karmakanda is that part of the Veda which deals with ritualistic actions and sacrificial ceremonies. It is an essential branch of Vedic learning that explains how various yajñas, samskaras (rites), and pūjās should be performed with correct mantras and procedures. Through these rituals, one attains inner purity, spiritual merit, and social harmony.

Paurohitya refers to the practical and professional application of these Vedic rituals in daily and special occasions, such as vivāha (marriage), upanayana (sacred thread ceremony), sraddha (ancestral rites), and various yajñas. A trained purohita not only performs these rituals but also guides society in following dharma and preserving ancient traditions.

This course aims to prepare students to become well-versed in both the scriptural foundations and the practical performance of Vedic rituals, integrating knowledge, devotion, and discipline.
